PMPC reaches an important milestone with the implementation of Kinesa for genomic data analysis on Google Cloud

This marks an important step in strengthening PMPC’s digital research infrastructure and advancing towards more precise and timely patient care.

Kinesa enables the analysis of large and complex genomic datasets within a scalable and secure cloud environment. Alongside local computing resources, cloud infrastructure provides additional flexibility and capacity when needed, for example for large-scale analyses and peak workloads. It also opens new opportunities for the use of standardised bioinformatics tools and collaborative research across institutions.

The implementation of this solution is a first important step towards establishing a secure and accessible environment for analysing and, in the future, sharing rare-disease genomic datasets across institutions. This is particularly relevant for the development of precision medicine in paediatrics, where high-quality and timely analysis of genomic information can contribute to a better understanding of disease and, ultimately, support diagnostic and treatment decisions.

A significant contribution to reaching this milestone was made by PMPC team members Jānis Rencis, Information Systems Security Administrator, Agnese Viluma, Bioinformatician, and Dace Enkure, Geneticist. Their combined expertise brought together secure cloud infrastructure, bioinformatics and genetics to develop a solution that addresses both current research needs and future clinical applications.

This achievement would also not have been possible without the close collaboration with colleagues at the Prinses Máxima Center. A special thank you goes to Jayne Hehir-Kwa, Jasper van Dalum and Karlijn Cammel for their expertise, commitment and hard work throughout the implementation process. This milestone is a strong example of how international collaboration and knowledge exchange can help build new technological capabilities in Latvia.

The implementation of Kinesa is only the first step. Substantial development and validation work will now follow to establish robust bioinformatics workflows and ensure their reliable use in clinical practice. PMPC continues to build the infrastructure, expertise and technological solutions needed to advance precision medicine and bring its benefits closer to patients.
